Total Portland and blended cement shipments (including imports) in the USA and Puerto Rico in June 2019 fell by 2.4 per cent to 9.1Mt when compared with June 2018, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). CMM plant starts operations

Ciment et Matériaux du Mali (CMM) has officially launched its cement business, announcing the first bags for sale by 15 October from its cement plant in Diago, Mali. CMM started the construction of the 0.5Mta unit in 2017. The XOF20bn (US$33.4m) new plant will create 150 direct jobs and 1500 indirect jobs.

Indonesian market contracts, exports rising in August

Cement deliveries in Indonesia slipped by 3.2 per cent YoY in August 2019 to 6,323,297t from 6,532,840t in August 2018, according to data by the Indonesian cement association, ASI, cited by Semen Indonesia Group. Mexico City’s cement prices have fallen in September compared to June 2019, according to a survey conducted by Morgan Stanley Casa de Bolsa. Holcim Mexico recorded a 17 per cent lower price in September compared to three months earlier, followed by Cementos Moctezuma with a decrease of 13 per cent. Cement production in Russia increased by 8.9 per cent YoY to 33Mt in the first seven months of 2019, according to Soyuzcement, the country’s cement association. New Liberian project proposed to NIC

Capital Link Corp has proposed a new Liberian cement plant project to the country’s National Investment Commission (NIC). Moullela Gray, chair of NIC, has disclosed to the Senate Committee on Concession and Investment that the country stands to benefit from US$35m during 15 years of operation. Demand for cement in Peru has increased 6.3 per cent YoY to 1.052Mt in August 2019 when compared with 0.989Mt in the year-ago period, according to the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cement price rises in Pointe-Noire

The price of cement in Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo, has seen a significant hike in the past few weeks, according to AllAfrica. The price increased from XAF60,000 (US$101.12)/t to XAF70,000/t, or in some cases, to XAF76,000. In terms of bagged product, prices have ranged between XAF3500-3800/t. The rise bucks recent trends that have seen prices fall as new cement plants have come online.

Maltese cement carrier refloated in Gulf of Saloniki

Cement carrier Sirios Cement I, which was loaded with a cargo of cement, ran aground in the Gulf of Saloniki, Greece, on its way to Italy on Saturday 14 September. The ship was refloated after four hours work with the help of tugs and taken back to Thessaloniki Port for inspection. Built in 1981, Sirios Cement I has a 13550dwt and travels under the Maltese flag.
