Boral says underlying profit strong despite softer H1, Australia

Construction materials group Boral Ltd said its underlying earnings remain strong despite net profit for the six months to December falling to A$179.7m from A$185.8m a year earlier. In 2005, the increase in cement production in Russia is set to continue. According to the Eurocement Group, its 2005 cement output is projected at 50.5 to 50.7Mt. In 2004, Russia manufactured 45.6Mt of cement, up 11.3% YoY. Turkish cement and clinker producer Batisoke Cimento registered a YoY rise in net profit for 2004. The rise is explained by the fact that the company’s results are adjusted to inflation in addition to increased clinker production due to better efficiency.  The company reported an operating profit of TRL5.105m (US$3.8m) for 2004, up from TRL47,600 (US$35,000) for 2003. The net profit of UAE Ras al-Khaimah Co for White Cement & Construction Materials surged 325.4 per cent YoY to AED40.2m (US$10.9m) in 2004. Lafarge Boral Gypsum in Asia (LBGA) plans to invest about $30m to double its plasterboard manufacturing capacity in China,  Lafarge said in a statement. The cement sales growth during January 2005 slows down to 7.6 per cent because of winter rains, slowing down construction activity and holidays on account of Eid-ul Azha.
