Adelaide Brighton expects to keep operating at full capacity

Cement and lime producer Adelaide Brighton Ltd expects to keep operating at full capacity this year, but it might not be able increase it’s prices much in the near term.  Adelaide Brighton today announced a 41 per cent jump in net profit to $81.45m for the year to December 31, 2004.  However this included a one-off $14m benefit from tax consolidation.  Excluding the benefit, net profit was up 17 per cent to $67.5m.  Revenue was up 10.5 per cent to $705.66m.  Managing director Mark Ch...

Holcim to stage global prize-giving in Bangkok

Holcim Group has Bangkok as the venue for the awards ceremony for its global contest to find works that mark genuine milestones in the advancement of sustainable construction.  The US$2-million (Bt76.9-million) Holcim Awards contest is entering its final phase, with the submission deadline on March 31. Cemex signs sale agreement with Votorantim, USA

Cemex has signed a US$389m agreement with Brazil’s Votorantim Participacoes to sell assets in the USA, Cemex said in a statement. Cemex will sell the plants Charlevoix and Dixon-Marquetteand, and a number of distribution terminals in the Great Lakes Region, the USA. The two plants have a capacity to produce 2Mta of cement.  The letter of intent over the deal was signed in November 2004. The India cement sector has registered 11% surge in sales last month, thanks to robust housing demand across most markets.   Industry sales shot up to 11.3Mt, up from 10.1Mt a year ago. Qatar National Cement Co (QNCC) registered a net profit of QAR170m (US$46.7m) in 2004, compared to QAR153m (US$42m) in 2003. Maltsovsky Portlandcement based in the Bryansk region produced 155,000 tons of cement in January, an increase of 20 per cent from the figure posted in the same period 2004. Colombian cement maker Cementos del Caribe posted a profit of COP83.74bn (US$35.5m) for 2004, down from COP104.07bn (US$44.1m) for the previous year.  Meanwhile,  Cementos Paz, posted a net profit of COP21.8bn (US$9.2m) for 2004, compared to COP18.5bn (US$7.8m) for 2003.  In turn, Cementos del Valle registered a profit of COP96bn (US$40.6m) for 2004, up from COP89.2bn (US$37.8m) for a year earlier.  Cement maker Cales y Cementos de Toluviejo posted a profit of COP13.7bn (US$5.8m)...

Tora 2004 net profit leaps 176%, Egypt

Net profit at Egypt’s Tora Cement rose 176 per cent in 2004 to E£151.9m (US$26.14,m), the stock exchange said in a statement. The cement firm had made E£55m in net profit in 2003, the statement said. Egyptian cement companies benefited last year from strong prices in the local market and the fall of the Egyptian pound against the dollar, making Egyptian exports relatively cheaper.
