Cemex announces Mexican price rise

The average price of cement in Mexico will increase five per cent effective immediately, newspaper El Norte quoted officials from cement maker Cemex as saying.  The raise comes as cement makers have had to assume increased production costs, they said. Lafarge Polska hikes cement prices

Lafarge Polska, the Polish unit of French cement manufacturer Lafarge, raised cement prices in Poland by between 16 Polish zloty (Euro 3.9 euro and 24 zloty (Euro5.9) per tonne, an increase by 10 per cent to 12 per cent, respectively, the company said on February 1, 2005. Russian production makes steady gains

According to Eurocement, Russian cement production reached 45.6Mt in 2004, an increase of 11.3 per cent from the figure reported in in 2003. Eurocement Group made more than 9.6Mt of cement in 2004, an increase of 13 per cent from the figure reported in the same period 2003. It accounts for 21 per cent of output in this segment of the market market. In 2003 41Mt of cement was produced in Russia, Eurocement Group press service reported.

Cimento Tupi to target exports

Brazilian Companhia Cimento Tupi, controlled by the group CP Cimento e Participacoes, will start to export next June, initially targeting at the US. The company is investing R$15m resources in the improvement of the terminal owned by Valesul in the Port of Sepetiba (Rio de Janeiro state) and expects that exports may increase turnover by R$45m in 2005. The new clinker production facility of the UAE Ras al-Khaimah cement manufacturer Union Cement is to raise the company’s annual clinker output to some 4.5Mt of clinker from the current 1.25Mt, it was reported on January 31, 2005.  The new facility, to be built by a Chinese company, is estimated at UAD500m ($136.1m), and will have a daily capacity of some 10,000 tonnes. Worker killed in mill unit

A 19-year-old man was killed while working at Portland Cement Factory in Makata industrial area in Blantyre last week after being crushed by machinery. Steven Smart from Dambo Village, Nsanje, was working as a labourer at the cement company and was killed as he was during the morning shift. The government faces a deadlock in ongoing talks with Cemex SA to settle a dispute over a failed put option deal involving a 51 pct stake in PT Semen Gresik, Bisnis Indonesia reported quoting an unnamed source.
