Proposed sale of Tuban cement plants rejected

The Lower House of Parliament’s (DPR) Commission VI has rejected a government plan to settle its dispute with Cemex SA with the sale of PT Semen Gresik cement plants Tuban I, II, and III to the Mexican cement maker, Bisnis Indonesia reported.    ’The government must keep a 51 per cent stake in Semen Gresik. Indonesia’s domestic cement consumption was 20.8 per cent higher in December than a year earlier, while full-year sales rose a higher-than-expected 9.1 per cent, industry data showed on Friday.   Southeast Asia’s largest economy consumed 2.8Mt of cement in December. Cement sales in the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu) increased 5.7 percent last month as economic growth spurred demand from the construction industry. Sales in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland rose to 796 594 tons from 753 836 tons a year earlier, the Midrand-based Cement and Concrete Institute said on its website yesterday. Sanghi to enter Mumbai cement market

Gujarat-based Sanghi Industries is set to enter Mumbai, the largest cement market in the country. Kesoram Industries plans to increase its annual capacity by 1.6Mt, which will take its total capacity to about 4.5Mt. Cement sales in Mexico during November 2004 reached 2.77Mt, a 9.1 per cent increase over the same month in 2003, Milenio news service reported.  Increased home building and public works, coupled with lower rainfall during the month compared with the same month 2003 were credited with the improved sales.
