The Ghana Cement Works (GHACEM) has honoured 40 distributors and customers nationwide at Tema with the assurance that the company would meet the challenges of the competition in the cement industry. Turkish cement producer Denizli Birlik Cimento will invest Euro120m in a cement factory in Yatagan, Mugla province, southwestern Turkey, in cooperation with 123 local businessmen, it was reported on January 7, 2005.  Construction works will start in May 2005 and are due to be completed for two to three years. Fire in Perlmooser’s plant

A fire broke out in Austrian cement producer Lafarge Perlmooser in Mannersdorf, Lower Austria, on the evening of January 6, 2005.  The fire, which started in one of the cable conduits was extinguished after four-and-a-half hours.  The damage will be cleared up within several days, according to the company, which is part of global Lafarge Group. There were no casualties. 

Swiss cement sales up 7.0 per cent

Cement sales in Switzerland rose by 7.0 per cent year-on-year to 3.955Mt in 2004, the Swiss cement industry association Cemsuisse said on January 7, 2005.  Cement sales went up by 9.2 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2004 and by 6.9 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2004, fuelled by the recovery of the construction industry.
