Nepal Maoists abduct workers

Maoists have abducted at least 140 workers of Udaypur [southeastern Nepal] Cement Factory Tuesday. Morocco’s cement consumption stood at 3.9Mt in the first five months of 2004, up 6.5 per cent year-on-year, it was reported on June 22, 2004.  The country’s eastern regions and the northern Tangier-Tetouan region registered the highest increase in cement consumption with respectively 14.4 per cent and 10.6 per cent. Saudi Q1 2004 cement output

The cement output of Saudi Arabia’s eight cement companies rose to 6.1Mt for the first three months of 2004, from 5.6Mt in the corresponding period of 2003, recent statistics showed.  Clinker output totalled 5.437Mt, up from 5.415Mt. Local cement sales stood at 5.8Mt, compared to 5.2Mt. Cement exports decreased to 398,000t from 477,000t, as only three of the eight companies exported cement during the period. Clinker exports registered a significant drop to 75,000t from 340,000t.

Paraguayan INC losses

The losses of Paraguayan state-owned cement company Industria Nacional de Cemento (INC) due to cement imports fro Brazil at dumping prices, are some US$60m at present, Paraguayan economist Jorge Boveda, said on June 20, 2004.  These losses are related to the period between 1995 and 2004. Siam Cement PCL is to spend Bt200m (US$4.89m) to boost cement production by half, calling it the industry’s first output boost by a Thai firm since the 1997/98 Asian economic crisis. Aggregate cement consumption edged down last year on the back of a slump in importation. Figures from the Cement Manufacturers’ Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) show cement consumption down 3.82 per cent to 302.99m 40kg bags in 2003, reversing the 7.57 per cent YoY uptick the previous year. Cement maker Iligan Cement Corp. is mulling options for sourcing its power needs in light of reports of a power shortage in Mindanao in the next few years.
