Cement despatches of cement majors Grasim Industries and Gujarat Ambuja Cements have dipped in June due to monsoon, while despatches of UltraTech Cemco have increased marginally.  Grasim’s despatches stood at 1.052Mt in June, a 2.78 per cent decline against despatches of 1.086Mt  in June 2003. Lafarge expands in China

Lafarge has undertaken to moves to strengthen its cement interests in China.  The first involves the building of a second production line at its Dujiangyan works.  This US$58m investment will double the cement capacity at the cement plant, which primarily serves the Chengdu market in south-western China, to 2.8m tonnes.  It is expected that the additional production line will come on stream towards the middle of 2006. Wienerberger moves into Russia

Kesoram Industries, the BK Birla group flagship, plans to invest Rs 350 crore to raise the capacity of its cement plant.  ’We want to increase capacity in cement . Cement sales in Chile totalled 1.57Mt in the first five months of 2004, a 2.8 per cent decrease from sales of 1.61Mt in the same period in 2003, according to a report by a Chilean brokerage house. The drop reflects falling demand for cement from large ongoing infrastructure projects, which have already reached the final phases of their implementation. The cement output of Saudi cement producer Southern Province Cement (SPC) rose to 987,000t for the first three months of 2004 from 883,000t in the corresponding period of 2003.  Local cement sales stood at 898,000t, compared to 879,000t.
