Cement demand in Argentina has fallen 13.8 per cent YoY to 940,112t in March 2019 when compared  with 1,091,122t in March 2018, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. After receiving approval to acquire Cemtech Ltd , Tanzania’s Simba Cement has announced plans to construct the Ortum Cement project that Cemtech had struggled to get off the ground. The project in West Pokot County, Kenya, was due to start in 2010. However, due to the recent developments, work is now expected to begin within a year. A number of factories in the Birgunj industrial corridor have reported damages after a major storm hit the districts of Bara and Parsa, Nepal, on Sunday evening. Rungta Group, Kalash Cement and Chachan Group are the companies that faced the worst impact, according to Subodh Gupta, senior vice chair of the Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industries. Morocco’s cement market expanded by 13.7 per cent to 1,278,216t in March 2019 when compared with 1,124,152t in March 2018, according to the country's Ministry of Urbanisation and Housing. In the first quarter of 2019, cement demand increased 7.8 per cent YoY to 3,567,943t from 3,308,935t in 1Q18.

US Portland and blended cement shipments slip 1% in December

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the USA reached 6.176Mt in December 2018, according to the latest data from the US Geological Survey (USGS). When compared with a volume of 6.244Mt in December 2017, this represents a 1.1 per cent YoY decrease. Cement production in Bangladesh has increased at a healthy rate in the last few years, according to a report by a local cement company. Lebanon’s Industry Minister, Wael Abu Faour, has revoked the licence of a cement plant planned for Ain Dara, Aley district. The decision comes after a protest by local residents last month, who disputed the project for environmental reasons.
