GCC commissions Rapid City plant expansion

Mexican cement producer Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC) has announced the expansion of its Rapid City, South Dakota cement plant became operational, adding 440,000tpa capacity to the existing plant. Bangladesh state-owned entity, Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC), and Saudi business firm, Engineering Dimensions, have signed an agreement to set up a new cement plant in northeastern Bangladesh. Pakistan cement sector records 7.3% fall in FDI

Pakistan’s cement and construction industries received a total foreign direct investment (FDI) of US$265.3m during the July-Nov 2018 period, according to the State Bank of Pakistan. This translates to a fall of 10.7 per cent YoY compared to US$296.9m of the year-ago period. The cement sector alone attracted US$22.9m of FDI in the first five months of FY18-19, decreasing 7.3 per cent YoY from US$24.6m. Meanwhile, the construction industry saw a decline of 10.9 per cent to US$242.5m.

New plant commissioned in Uzbekistan

A new facility in Korauzyak district, Karakalpakstan (Uzbekistan), has been commissioned, according to Trend News. The Uzbek-Chinese joint venture, Titan Cement, saw a total investment of UZS302.4bn (US$36.3m) in the 200,000tpa project. Furthermore, in the Andijan region of Uzbekistan, a new US$630m project has begun construction with the support of Chinese companies.

Pakistan exports rise in November

Pakistan's cement industry received foreign exchange revenue of US$26.77m by exporting 635,192t of cement during November 2018, compared to US$26.74m and 616,648t in the previous month. This shows minor MoM growth of 0.1 per cent and three per cent in terms of value and quantity, respectively, according to the Federal Bureau of Statistics. Cement consumption in Peru rose by 4.8 per cent YoY in November to 1.017Mt, up from 0.971Mt in November 0217, according to the latest data from the country’s cement association, Asocem. Cement sales in the Brazilian market between January and November 2018 totalled 48.7Mt, representing a 1.2 per cent fall YoY, according to the National Union of the Cement Industry (SNIC). Apparent consumption of cement, which includes domestic sales plus imports, slipped 1.5 per cent YoY to 49Mt. Azerbaijan hits record high in cement production

Azerbaijan has produced over 3.2Mta of cement in the first 11 months of the year, a record amount in the entire history of building materials in the country, according to Turan Information Agency. Representing a 21.1 per cent YoY increase, it has been attributed to government policies which stimulate local production and see high import duties on cement. In 2017 the country produced 2.954Mta of cement at a value of AZN265.5m (US$156.49m).

Production rises in Iran's South Khorasan province

Two plants in Iran's South Khorasan province have produced around 765,000t of cement since the start of the current Iranian year (21 March-22 Oct), a 22 per cent YoY increase, according to Davud Shahraki, chairman of the province's Industry, Mining and Trade Organisation.
