Brazil cement sales slip 1.2% in 2018, growth return in 2019

Cement sales in the Brazilian market remained largely stable at 3.964Mt in December 2018 from 3.97Mt in December 2017, according to the latest data from the country’s cement association, SNIC. Rating agency ICRA forecasts that domestic cement demand in India will grow seven per cent YoY in FY19 and by around eight per cent in FY20, driven mainly by rural and affordable housing projects as well as larger infrastructure projects for roads, irrigation and metro development. Aggregate cement sales from 17 producers in Saudi Arabia slipped by six per cent in December to 3.82Mt, compared to 4.08Mt in December 2017, reported Yamama cement. Work to start on 1.5Mta cement plant in Tunisia

United Cement Investor, a Tunisian company, is building a greenfield 1.5Mta cement plant in Tunisia. The plant will be situated in Bir Thlathin, south Tataouine, Tunisia and work is to begin on construction in March 2019. The new facility will create 419 direct jobs and 600 indirect jobs, but the French investors have so far only acquired 65 per cent of the land required. The plant is scheduled to be completed by 2022.

Sri Lanka's cement output rose 11% in September

Sri Lanka's cement production fell 3.2 per cent to 2.086Mt in the first nine months of 2018, but output picked up in September. Total imports and production was flat at 6.204Mt in the first nine months of the year, against 6.229Mt a year earlier, reports the Central Bank. Argentina’s cement market contracted 19.5 per cent YoY to 808,887t in December 2018, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. In December 2017 domestic off-take was 1.004Mt. Domestic dispatches of grey cement in Colombia advanced 4.3 per cent YoY to 1.065Mt in November 2017 from 1.021Mt, according to the latest data from DANE, the country’s statistics office. Cement consumption in Vietnam remained largely stable in November 2018 when compared with the previous year at 5.675Mt, according to the Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA).
