Growth of Indian cement sector slows in March

UltraTech moves closer to plant operation

India-based UltraTech Cement has moved closer to commencing operations at its plant in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh. The facility, initially owned by JP Associates (JPA), can only begin operations once certain environmental conditions are met. In line with a state cabinet decision, UltraTech can start production once JPA pays a penalty for mining on forested land. Colombia's cement market contracts 10% in March

Cement deliveries in the Colombian cement market fell 9.9 per cent YoY to 976,300t in March, according to the country’s national statistics office, DANE. Around 68 per cent, or 668,700t of this total was supplied as bagged cement with a further 307,600t as bulk product. In the first quarter of 2018, Russian cement companies supplied 4.43Mt of cement to their customers by rail. Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) in Afghanistan said they will re-issue a tender for the construction of the Jabal Saraj cement factory. MoMP officials said the cement plant project had been put out to tender in the past and that an Afghan company had looked set to win the contract. A cement plant worth almost RUB12bn (US$194m) will be built in the Russian Republic of Bashkiria, RBC news agency reported on Tuesday. The clinker capacity of the plant will be 5000tpd. Romania’s cement association, CIROM, expects the country’s cement market to show only modest growth in 2018. "We are not very optimistic about the cement market in 2018. The Colombian Superintendent of Industry and Commerce (SIC) has ratified sanctions imposed in December on Argos, Holcim Colombia and Cemex Colombia, for price cartelisation between 2010-12.
