Uganda cement prices rise due to cement shortage

Cement prices in Uganda have increased by UGX5000-11,000 (US$1.35-2.98) within a month, sparking a country-wide crisis in the building sector, according to the Daily Monitor. Pader District, some 411km from the capital Kampala, reported the highest price at UGX50,000 for a 50kg bag of cement. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico increased 5.7 per cent YoY to 5.752Mt in January 2018, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The top five cement markets were Texas, California, Florida, Arizona and Georgia (in descending order), which accounted for around 51 per cent of total shipments. Cement consumption in Argentina increased 6.2 per cent in March 2018 to 1,091,121t from 1,027,094t in March 2017, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. When compared with the previous month, sales to the domestic market advanced 18.1 per cent from 924,085t in February 2018. Pakistan reached its highest-ever capacity utlisation at 93.7 per cent during the 9MFY18 period, ended March 2018. In total, cement dispatches rose 14.7 per cent YoY to 34.75Mt, according to figures supplied by the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA). The World Cement Association (WCA) has announced that China United Cement Corporation (CUCC) has joined as a Corporate Member. CUCC is a cement company with a production capacity of 80Mta and more than 70 branches and subsidiaries all over China. Cement production in Pakistan rises 12% in 7MFY18

Cement production in Pakistan recorded 12.1 per cent growth YoY during the first seven months of the current financial year. The country produced 23.77Mt of cement throughout July 2017-January 2018, compared to 21.2Mt of the year-ago period.  In January 2018 alone, production increased 23.5 per cent YoY to 3.64Mt (2017: 2.95Mt), according to the Business Recorder. 

Tamil Nadu scales down cement supply scheme

The Tamil Nadu government has recently scaled down its procurement for the ‘Amma Cement Supply Scheme’ as a result of poor sales figures, according to The Hindu. The project was set up in 2014 to help low and middle income groups purchase cement at subsidised prices. Colombia’s grey cement sales contracted 4.8 per cent YoY to 959,500t in February 2018, according to DANE, the national statistics office. Dispatches to Norte de Santander registered the largest growth at 43.9 per cent YoY, followed by Valle del Cauca, where deliveries expanded by 6.3 per cent.
