Cement sales in Puerto Rico down 70% in September

Cement sales in Puerto Rico fell by 70.2 per cent YoY in September. While sales have been declining since 2013, the size of the reduction in September has been attributed to the economic inactivity following the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Cement sales fell 12.3 per cent in 2016, following a decline of 8.5 and 9.8 per cent in 2015 and 2014, respectively. SCG Cement sees 8% rise YoY from sales in Vietnam

SCG Cement’s revenue from sales in Vietnam has seen an eight per cent rise YoY to VND6.88tn (US$309m) for 3Q17. The company’s revenue from selling high-valued products reached VND87.13tn for 9M17, which is a rise of seven per cent YoY and represents 39 per cent of the group's total revenues. In addition, the company invested VND1.6tn in research and development activities in the first nine months of 2017, according to Roongrote Rangsiyopash, the company's president and CEO.

Eurocement Group unveil plans to build cement plant

The new cement plant will be an expansion on the site of Akhangarancement JSC in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This project is expected to raise the annual production capacity of the site from 2Mt to 5Mt. According to Eurocement Group, the plant will be fitted with equipment mainly from European manufacturers and become the largest cement enterprise in the region. The new plant will be operational from 2020. 

Fuel shortage causes cement plant to halt production

Fábrica de Cimento do Kwanza Sul SA ( FCKS) in the Cuanza Sul Province of Angola was forced to stop production on Wednesday after a significant lack of HFO.  According to local reports, Edmundo Ferreira, the operational manager of the plant, confirmed that the plant will resume production as soon as the fuel issue is resolved. The plant requires 400,000l of fuel to achieve its daily production capacity of 4200t.

ASI: Indonesia cement sales up 7%

For the first nine months of 2017, cement consumption in Indonesia rose 6.6 per cent to 47.432Mt from 45.504Mt, according to the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI). The data reflects sales by ASI members only. Demand in Java increased 11.3 per cent to 26.962Mt YoY while the off-take from ASI members in Sumatra showed a 4.2 per cent rise to 9.988Mt and in Nusa Tenggara, ASI members supplied 2.687Mt (+2.1 per cent) in 9M17. August cement shipments in the US up 3%

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the US and Puerto Rico in August 2017 reached 9.7Mt, an increase of 3.1 per cent when compared with August 2016, according to the latest data from the US Geological Survey (USGS). Imported clinker and use of diesel engines to power cement production lines are causing cement manufacturers in Malawi to raise cement prices. A 50kg bag of cement was selling at MKW6600 (US$9.11) a month ago, but now ranges between MKW9000- MKW10,000 (US$12.4-13.8) in Blantyre, representing a 60 per cent price increase. BUA Chairman says the cement industry is vital for Nigeria's foreign exchange

Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, chairman of BUA Group, has said that the local cement manufacturers produce over 25Mt cement thus saving the country US$2m annually in foreign exchange. Vietnam is estimated to have produced 69Mt of cement in the first 10 months of this year, representing a 6.5 per cent rise YoY, says the government-run General Statistics Office. Domestic cement producers manufactured 8Mt in October. In the first nine months, output from the country’s cement plants reached 61Mt, according to the office’s revised data.
