Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the USA and Puerto Rico rose 3.4 per cent YoY to 8.5Mt in July, according to data by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Cemex forecasts 0.5Mt required to restore Mexican earthquake damage

Cemex said on Thursday that reconstruction efforts from two major earthquakes that hit Mexico last month will likely require 500,000t of cement over the next 12 to 18 months. The quakes, which together killed more than 470 people, collapsed dozens of buildings and damaged more than 180,000 homes across the country.

Colombia's cement demand falls 5% in August 2017

Grey cement consumption in Colombia in August 2017 reached 1.033Mt, down 5.2 per cent when compared with August 2016, according to the national statistics office, DANE. Shift in Bolivian market due to reduced high-rise construction

The decrease in the construction of high-rise buildings in Bolivia has led to a change in cement sales, according to Fancesa’s Marketing Manager, Marcelo Maranon. Purchases are now carried out in random volumes rather than requiring large-sized deliveries, he said. The markets in La Paz, Santa Cruz and Cochabamba have become saturated with such buildings, shifting the emphasis on smaller projects.

Peru sees 4% rise in cement demand in September

Cement consumption in Peru advanced 3.8 per cent YoY from 0.82Mt in September 2016 to 0.851Mt one year later, according to data from Asocem, the country's cement association. Total dispatches increased 2.9 per cent YoY to 0.884Mt in September 2017 from 0.86Mt in the year-ago period. This includes a 14 per cent drop in cement exports to 33,000t. Argentina’s cement producers delivered 1,121,311t of cement in September 2017, up 12.6 per cent YoY and 0.8 per cent MoM, according to the country’s cement association, AFCP. Some 200 large components for the new production line of Bolivian cement producer Fábrica Nacional de Cemento (Fancesa) have arrived at the northern Chilean port of Iquique. Yeoh Tiong Lay, the founder of and execuitive chairman of group YTL Corp, passed away on Wednesday, the group said in a news release. He was 88 years old. Mr Yeoh founded what was originally a construction company in 1955 and undertook civil works while the country was under British colonial rule before participating in development projects after independence in 1957.
