Beni Suef begins construction of coal mill, Egypt

Beni Suef Cement has began the construction of the coal mill worth EGP200m (US$26.3m), to be used as an alternative to natural gas and heavy fuel oil at its cement plant in Egypt. State-owned cement producer Semen Baturaja recorded a 9.7 per cent decline in January sales volumes, due to increased rainfall and weakening commodity prices which resulted in property and infrastructure developments being delayed. Japanese cement producers have increased export levels in a bid to help offset a slowdown in domestic consumption due to a slump in housing investment. PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa expects volumes to grow six per cent this year, reported Kontan, citing CEO, Christian Kartawijaya. The HeidelbergCement group reported cement sales of 18.8Mt in 2014, up three per cent YoY, thanks to increased capacity. The company said it will spend IDR5trn (US$391m) on capital expenditure this year. The 14th line at its Citeureup plant in West Java is expected to start operating from the third quarter of this year.

Indonesian cement sales fell by 2.9 per cent YoY to 4.5Mt in January 2015, as heavy rains affected construction activity in several areas. Binani Cement is in discussions to sell its 1.2Mta grinding unit at Neem Ka Thana, Rajasthan, to reduce debt. The company is looking for prospective buyers and is hoping to complete the sale after March, a source told Cogenis news. Kuwait Portland Cement posts 5.2% rise in annual profit

Kuwait Portland Cement said Tuesday its net profit stood at KWD8.26m (US$27.9m) for 2014, up 5.2 per cent from the KWD7.85m recorded in 2013. Earnings per share increased to 90.89 fils from 86.37 fils. The company said total assets rose to KWD88.9m at end-2014 from KWD74m a year earlier. The board of directors proposed a 70 per cent cash dividend for 2014, equal to 70 fils per share, in addition to a five per cent bonus issue, translating into five shares for each 100 shares held.

TPCC refutes plant closure reports, Tanzania

Tanzania Portland Cement Company (TPCC) has refuted reports of closing down its operations due to environmental concerns as "false and overly exaggerated". Alfonso Rodriguez, TPCC managing director told the Daily News on Wednesday that: "We are not closed, the operations are going on as usual at TPCC." Last week, the cement producer was reportedly ordered to close down operations by the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) over allegations of environmental pollution.
