Vietnam Jan-July 2013 output rises

Vietnam produced 32.5Mt of cement in the first seven months of this year, up 5.9 per cent from a year earlier, data from the country's General Statistics Office (GSO) has showed. During July alone, output rose by 14.3 per cent from the same month of last year to 5.1Mt, the government-run office's monthly report revealed. The GSO has revised down the country’s cement output in the first six months of this year to 27.4Mt from a previous estimate of 28.1Mt.

Philippine 2Q13 cemend demand increases 8.8%

Philippine cement sales rose 8.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2013, data from the Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) showed yesterday. Sales in the second quarter increased to 5.349Mt sold from 4.915Mt in the same period last year. Cement sales in the first half of the year also rose by 6.2 per cent to 10.136Mt from 9.546Mt in the corresponding period of the year before.

Cemex Tilbury reaches cement production milestone, UK

The Cemex grinding and blending cement plant at Tilbury, UK, has produced its millionth tonne of cement and has also achieved an increase of 26 per cent in production, while decreasing its consumption of energy by 28 per cent since it was opened in 2009. Sri Lanka’s State Resources and Enterprise Development Ministry is to relaunch the Kankesanthurai cement works, involving an investment of LKR1.5bn (US$11.4m) NSM Samsudeen, chairman of the Sri Lanka Cement Corporation, handed over proposals to reestablish the defunct factory to Minister Dayasritha Tissera on Friday, according to reports by the Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation. Lafarge opens Sagunto laboratory

Lafarge has inaugurated its first R&D laboratory in Europe at Sagunto, Spain. The centre, which is the company’s second in the world after its US facility in Houston, will research the use of cement in oil and gas wells. Construction on Dangote’s new cement plant in Elf du Wouri, Cameroon, is on schedule to start production in January 2014. Birla Corp to establish new plant in Madhya Pradesh, India

Birla Corp Ltd is planning to set up a new 2Mta cement plant in Madhya Pradesh, India. A source told local press that the company will spend INR25bn over the next three years to set up the new unit.  The company will fund majority of the capital expenditure through internal  accruals, the source added. Birla Corp currently has cement operations in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, Rae  Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, Chanderia in Rajasthan and Durgapur in West Bengal.
