Bangladesh: strike disrupts inland clinker transport

An indefinite strike by the Bangladesh River Transport Workers’ Federation has disrupted the transport of imported clinker from Chittagong Port to cement plants through inland rivers. No clinker has been transported since Wednesday due to the strike, a spokesman of Chittagong Port told CemNet News. JP Morgan cautions the near-term outlook for Indian cement companies remains "hazy", in contrast with market consensus for a strong V-shaped recovery in infrastructure spending over the next 12 months. Investors in the KES12bn cement factory in Pokot have pledged to complete the project next year after revising its implementation plan. The project was initially scheduled to end this year. Domestic cement sales in Switzerland saw a 6.2 per cent decline in 2012, latest data from the domestic cement association, Cemsuisse shows. For full year 2012, domestic sales reached 4.395Mt compared to 4.687Mt in 2011. Vietnam 2012 sales fall 3.5% YoY

Total cement sales in Vietnam (domestic plus exports) in 2012 fell 3.5 per cent YoY to 54Mt. A recent update by the Vietnam Cement Association (VNCA) shows domestic sales were down 7.71 per cent YoY to 45.5Mt during the year as a frozen real estate market hurt local demand. Tunisia has reported a double-digit rise in cement sales for the first 11 months of 2012 while exports saw a significant drop over the same period. Domestic sales rose by 11.6 per cent during January-November 2012 to 6.559Mt from 5.875Mt recorded in the first 11 months of 2011.
