Alleged South Africa cement cartel hearing faces tribunal

South Africa’s competition Tribunal will consider a settlement agreement reached between AfriSam — a member of an alleged cement cartel – and the Competition Commission. According to the commission, the settlement is a reflection of AfriSam’s material co-operation with it in uncovering and providing further information on the conduct between cartel members. Peru 10-month 2011 cement dispatches edge ahead

Cement dispatches in the Peruvian market amounted to 6.74Mt from January to October 2011, 1.7% more than recorded in the same period in 2010 (6.63Mt), according to the Asociación de Productores de Cemento (Asocem). 
During that period cement production stood at 6,91Mt, representing an increase of 1.74% YoY (6.79Mt).

The fall in Spanish cement consumption has been accelerating after a slight rise at the beginning of the year. Paraguay’s INC announces another kiln stoppage

Managers of Paraguay-based Industria Nacional de Cemento have announced a further stoppage of the kiln at the company’s Vallemi plant, Concepción, as the company carries out maintenance works and intends to replace part of the refractory bricks.   The stoppage is expected to last 15-20 days and will see the replacement of 15-20m of refractory bricks as well as a change in the burner tube.   However, the management foresees no disruptions in supply of the domestic market, which has been pla...

Saudi Arabia’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal al Saud, weekend said he was looking to making substantial investments in Nigeria, and that “funds are not a constraint.” Alwaleed, who was named as the world’s richest Arab by Forbes Magazine and 5th in the world with assets of US$20.4bn, said he was attracted to Nigeria because the market was large, just as he indicated that he had strong interests in cement production, hotels, banking, oil and charity projects.
