Sinai Cement suffers after strikes on pipeline, Egypt

A series of explosions that have rocked Egypt’s main gas pipeline through the Sinai Peninsula is taking its toll on the companies that need the gas to operate. Sinai Cement is a prime example. Association welcomes foreign investment, Indonesia

The Indonesian Cement Association (ASI) says it welcomes several foreign companies’ plans to build new cement factories in the country, adding that their operations will not affect the existing cement producers’ operations, according to an industry group.

Lafarge in talks with Etex over gypsum assets

Lafarge announced that the Group has entered into exclusive negotiations with Etex Group for the sale of its European and South American Gypsum assets at an enterprise value of EUR1bn. Spanish association sees larger than expected falls for 2011

Spanish cement consumption is expected to fall between 12% and 13% year on year in 2011 versus 10% previously projected, mainly due to lower civil engineering activity, according to Spanish cement association Oficemen. 
"If at the start of the year we expected a consumption of 22Mt, with the latest data we think that the fall will be higher, up about 21.5Mt," said president of the association, Dieter Kiefer.

Texas Industries posts US$106.8m pre-tax loss

Texas Industries’ turnover was a marginal 0.1% ahead at US$621.8m, in the financial year to the end of May, having fallen by 26.0% in the previous year. Calls for increased energy self-sufficiency at Vietnam plants

Cement plants across Vietnam with a combined production capacity of 100Mt in 2015 are likely to consume 9bnkWh of electricity, said the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The power demand will be lift to 11.7bnkWh in 2020, the ministry attributed without giving details on both the number of the cement mills and their total capacity. The Ministry of Industry and Trade is calling on cement mills to be self-sufficient of at least 20% of electricity consumed from now through 2015.

Rise in Colombian cement production and dispatches

Colombia cement production in May amounted to 933,300t, 14.8 per cent more than the same month of 2010 (813,000t). 
During May 2011, 870,000t were shipped, an increase of 15.2 percent over May 2010. 
For the year to date (January to May 2011), cement production also increased 14.1 per cent over the same period of 2010. Meanwhile, shipments to the domestic market showed a rise of 12.5 per cent.
