Taiheiyo to start burning disaster debris at Ofunato plant, Japan

Taiheiyo Cement Corp. said Monday it will start incinerating debris left by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in two cities in Iwate Prefecture at its plant in Ofunato next week as part of efforts to reconstruct the cities devastated by the disasters. Bahrain ‘meeting cement requirements’

Bahrain is supplying the local construction market with 6750tpd of cement to meet its growing needs, and reports of a shortage in the kingdom were exaggerated, said a senior government official. Of this, 4,750tpd is imported while the remaining is produced locally, an Industry and Commerce Ministry spokesman said. Following the retirement of Jadranko Garilović in June of former member of the Board of Holcim Croatia, the company has made some new appointments. Nenad Juretic, director of sales of cement and logistics is a new board member. Meanwhile, Virna Višković Agušaj has become the new technical director and a member of the management team.

Dangote outlines African expansion

The Dangote Group has recently shed light on its cement projects in Africa, from Senegal to Gabon, through Cameroon and Cote d’Ivoire, countries in which it intends to invest no less than US$2.5bn.

 Dangote Cement, has announced plans to invest in a broad plan of cement across the continent within three years. Starting next year, Dangote Cement should have built and operated a cement plant with a capacity of 1.5Mt in Senegal, and a grinding unit of 1Mt in Cameroon.

Steppe Cement looks for 7% market growth this year

Steppe Cement is expecting the Kazakh cement market to improve by around 7% this year to about 6.1Mt. This is after a 12% increase last year to  5.7Mt. Imports were reduced further in 2010 to some 20% of consumption. Average cement prices were relatively stable last year at about US$54/t ex. factory and US$63/t delivered. The Zambia Environment Management Agency (ZEMA) has directed Ndola Lime Company to shut down its plant which is releasing dust emissions higher than the legal limits. India’s Rourkela-based Shiva Cement on Friday said the cost of its proposed brownfield expansion has been revised upwards by nearly 52 per cent to INR248 crore (US$55.6m).
