Lafarge Pakistan reports profit in 1Q11??

Lafarge Pakistan Cement Ltd. has reported a profit after tax of PKR13.847m (US$0.16m) as opposed to losses of PKR407.719m in same period last year. Its sales stood at PKR1.675bn against PKR1.639bn of Jan-March 2010. Its financial cost increased to PKR 213.525m from PKR175.984m last year.

East African cement makers call for tax review

The East Africa Community (EAC) governments should review the common external tariff on cement, which was reduced to 25% in 2008 as a temporary measure to curb the perceived short supply in the region, EAC cement producers have said. 

 The manufacturers want the tariff to be reviewed back to 35% or US$50/t to level the playing field now that there is enough investment in production capacity.

Qatar’s largest cement producer has ruled out the possibility of an increase in cement prices and said steps were being taken to ensure that the prices remain stable. Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for February 2011 were 3.6Mt. This was 7% higher than shipments in February 2010. Lafarge and Anglo American plan to sell GBP600m worth of assets to pay down debt and avoid anticompetitive action, the Financial Times said on Monday, citing people familiar with the talks. Assets to be put up for sale include cement plants, quarries and ready-mix concrete mills, the paper said. The two companies announced in February a construction materials joint venture with expected combined sales of GBP1.8bn.

Zambia’s competition body has approved plans by a Chinese company to set up two cement plants in the country, saying this will enhance competition in the sector, the Zambia Daily Mail reported on Friday.
