Chilean cement operation Polpaico is hoping for a better 2011 given that increased demand predicted in the wake of February 2010´s earthquake did not really materialised. Russia’s Sibirsky Cement swings to 2010 loss

Russian holding company Sibirsky Cement swung to a net loss of RUB69.6m (US$2.5m)  in 2010 against a net profit of RUB6.9m in 2009, the company said in a statement Tuesday. Sibirsky Cement’s revenue rose 14.3% on the year to RUB887.5m in 2010, the gross profit was up 14.8% on the year to RUB831.6m, while the operating profit fell 21.3% on the year to RUB315.1m. Polish producers see strong period of growth

During the first four months of 2011, Polish cement producers sold 4.3Mt – up 33 per cent over the same period last year, Puls Biznesu reports. In April alone, sales were up 17.4 per cent with 1.7Mt sold. According to Jan Deja, director of the Polish Cement Association (SPC), if there is no early onset of winter this year, sales could rise by an impressive 10 per cent to a total of 17Mt. The Institute for Market Economics predicts that growth will continue until at least 2015.

Indian prices to rises to see marginal increases - report

Brokerage firm Elara Securities (India) has said it does not expect Indian cement prices to rise significantly in the current fiscal due to sluggish demand. Historically, the cement industry has gained pricing power only when capacity utilisation surpasses 85 per cent. Investigations into health concerns over a Flintshire cement plant in Wales have found no evidence of consistent cancer clusters in the area. The study, by Public Health Wales and other agencies, also says air quality around the Hanson Cement plant in Padeswood near Mold is "favourable".
