Fall in Spanish demand accelerates

Data from Spanish cement association, Oficemen, shows demand in April was 1.8Mt, representing a decrease of 17.5% compared with April 2010 and continues the downward trend in the first months of the year. This is the lowest April data for the last 22 years. On the other hand, clinker production increased by 1.9% in April, but cement output fell by 9.5%, to 2Mt.

PPC reports lower 1H earnings, South Africa

South Africa’s Pretoria Portland Cement reported a 38 per cent drop in first-half earnings on Tuesday, hit by continued weakness in the country’s construction industry. Taiwan’s majors see April sales increase over 15%

Thanks to increased domestic demand, Taiwan’s leading cement producers, including Taiwan Cement Corp. and Asia Cement Corp, saw sales increase by over 15% YoY in April.

Ras Al Khaimah White Cement revenues rise, UAE

Ras Al Khaimah Company for White Cement & Construction Company saw revenues rise by almost a third in the first quarter against the same period last year, although a rise in a finance costs saw net profits remain the same at US$5.44m (AED 20m). Sales for the three months reached US$28.28 (AED103.9m), up 30.5% from the US$21.67m (AED79.6m) the previous year, with gross profit rising by than 50% to US$8.48 (AED31.16m) from US$6.23 (AED22.9m).

Paraguay’s INC increases cement dispatches up 24%

Industria Nacional de Cemento (INC), Paraguay’s sole cement producer, registered a 24% increase in May dispatches to-date (2-12 May). The state-owned cement company delivered on average 41,541 bags per day. Last month, the average daily delivery in its markets – Villeta, Vallemí and Concepcion – stood at 33,501 bags per day.
