Binani Cement posts 3Q loss on higher costs

India’s Binani Cement Ltd Friday swung to a net loss for its fiscal third quarter, hurt by higher raw-material and energy costs. For the quarter ended Dec. 31, the cement company posted a net loss of INR115.2m, compared with a net profit of INR571.7m in the year-earlier period. Sales dropped marginally to INR3.98 billion from INR4.02bn. Binani Cement’s power and fuel costs rose more than 15% to INR1.27bn, while its outward freight costs increased over 25% to INR1.04bn.

Loma Negra appoints Argentinean executive

Loma Negra, the cement company from Camargo Correa, has appointed as CEO the Argentinean executive Oswaldo Schutz, that prior performance as commercial manager of the company, responding to Brazilian executives heading it since the 2005 purchase from Amalia Lacroze Fortabat. Schutz, 59, graduated in the UBA university and has post graduation studies in Penn State and Harvard Business School and IAE.

Tororo Cement expands, Uganda

Tororo Cement Industry, a local manufacturer of cement will complete the expansion of its production facility worth Ushs100b ($50m) by June 2011. According to the Chief Marketing Manager, Mr. Alok  Kala, this may bring down the price of cement and other building materials hence boosting the construction industry as a result of increased production. Steppe revenue up 23%, Kazakhstan

Steppe Cement Ltd said it recorded revenue for the year ended 31 December 2010 of KZT10,740m (US$73m) up 23% higher than KZT8,737m last year. Cement sales volumes for the year were 1.16Mt, representing an improvement of 24% over sales of 930,297t in 2009. The company stated that in 2010, cement demand in Kazakhstan reached 5.7Mt, up 14% over 2009. Imports into Kazakhstan remained stable at 21%. Lucky Cement posts 9% fall in second-quarter profit

Lucky Cement Ltd, Pakistan’s biggest producer of the building material, said second-quarter profit fell nine per cent after transport costs rose and exports to Gulf nations declined. Pretoria Portland Cement Co, South Africa’s largest cement producer, slumped to a four-month low after the company said its cement sales in the country in the quarter through December declined by five per cent. Vietnam exports forecast to rise by 500,00t

Vietnam will export 1.5Mt of cement this year, an increase of 500,000t over last year, according to the Vietnam Cement Association. Twelve new cement plants would become operational this year, with a capacity to supply 10.18Mta, said the head of the association’s secretariat, Nguyen Van Diep. The Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (CMAN) says estimated supply of 17Mt of local production of cement is achievable in 2011. The executive secretary of CMAN, James Salako, said in Lagos that this was part of the manufacturers’ efforts to guarantee self sufficiency in the local demand of cement.
