Asia Cement to explore opportunities in Guam

Taiwan-based Asia Cement Corp will in November travel to Guam to check the potential business opportunity generated by the relocation of a U.S. military base to cost US$6bn. 

K.Y. Lee, president of Asia Cement, said his company has obtained orders of several million dollars from the military base relocation, which will span four to five years to offer Asia Cement several billion dollars of orders.

Vietnam: more coal needed for production

The Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (Vicem) member companies need more coal to produce cement, officials from the group have said. Ohorongo Cement receives first coal shipment, Namibia

Nambia’s only cement producer, Ohorongo Cement, received its first consignment of coal last week, when 30,000t of coal was offloaded in Walvis Bay.  International shipping and logistics firm Grindrod shipped the coal from Maputo in Mozambique. From Walvis Bay to Otavi, the coal will be transported by rail. 
To produce the targeted cement quantities of the first year of production, approximately 70,000t of coal will be burned during the course of the next 12 months.

Argos to close three clinker lines, Colombia ?

To make way for urban development from Barranquilla to Puerto Colombia, Argos confirmed the shuttering of three kiln lines.

The vice president of corporate affairs of the cement company, Carlos Raul Yepes, said that following the closures, clinker will be brought in from other plants. 

 Yepes said: "Argos is not closing its plant in Barranquilla, nor the facilities Sabanagrande."

French production likely to be 18Mt in 2010

Bruno Carré, president of the Syndicat Français de l’Industrie Cimentière (SFIC) expects production to reach 18Mt this year, up two per cent compared to 2009. In terms of the outlook for consumption, Mr Carré said: "Only the new housing market activity supports cement in 2010-2011.” He added: "Despite the lacklustre numbers, the cement market in France defends itself rather better than the European average."

Nigerian industrial giant, Dangote Industries has given notice it aims to become the largest cement producer in Africa by 2014. Camargo Correa expands cement operations

Camargo Correa has approved investments of R$3.6bn (US$2.12bn) from 2011-16 to expand its cement operations via the filial Camargo Correa Cimentos. The sum is part of a R$14bn spree announced by the company that includes the acquisition of 33% on the Portuguese cement company Cimpor in a deal worth R$3.5bn. Pakistan cement dispatches fall

All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) said on Monday that private sector dispatches (local and exports) stood at 1.378Mt of cement during the month of September 2010 compared to 1.51Mt in August 2010 - recording a downfall of 8.74 per cent. The fall further increased to 20.85 per cent if compared with total dispatches of September 2009 (1.741Mt).
