Indian cement maker Birla Corp. Wednesday said its first-quarter net profit fell 24%, as raw material costs jumped.   Net profit for the quarter ended June 30 slipped to INR1.18 billion from INR1.55 billion a year earlier, the company said in a statement to the Bombay Stock Exchange. Tangshan Jidong Cement Co Ltd has announced plans to inject a total of CNY 700m into seven subsidiaries to expand its market in North China. Turkey’s cement sector growth could hit double-digits this year on domestic demand, although higher energy prices will likely sap profits, Turkey’s Cement Manufacturers’ Association (TCMA) said. Namibia: Ohorongo Cement plant on track

Construction of Ohorongo Cement Namibia’s (OHN) new cement plant near Otavi, Nambia is well on track, according to company officials. Buoyed by increased sales, Ambuja cement today reported a 20.5 per cent increase in its net profit to INR391 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2010. Texas-based cement manufacturer Eagle Materials Inc posted first quarter net income of US$10.5m or US$0.24 per share, compared to US$12.0m or US$0.27 per share in the same quarter last year. Fire breaks out at St Mary’s cement, USA

The fire department was called to the blaze at St Marys Cement’s Bowmanville plant on Thursday, July 22 around 9 a.m when a fire broke out on top of a 200ft silo. Fire Chief Gordon Weir said it was not a big fire, but the height of the structure was challenging. There are no water hookups at the top of the silo to extinguish the fire.
