Argentina construction activity increases 10%

During the first five months of 2010 Argentina’s construction industry increased its activity by 10 per cent annually while the housing market reversed its decline from previous years and the housing supply grew 7.1 per cent, according to a report from the University Argentina de la Empresa (UADE).

 The study, prepared by the Institute of Economics, Faculty of Economics, forecasts  short-term "stability" in  real estate sales and prices, as well as the supply of rental properties.

Europe construction output declines for second month

European construction output dropped for a second month in May, led by declines in Germany. Construction in the 16-nation euro region fell 1 percent from April, when it decreased 0.3 percent, the European Union’s statistics office in Luxembourg said today. FYM to use 25kg bags, Spain

Spanish cement producer FYM, a subsidiary of Italcementi, has decided to use 25kg bags for cement packaging instead of the traditional 35kg. The company is one of the first manufacturers in Spain to switch to this format.

ASEC secures credit for new Algeria line

PSC and BEA Bank have provided an initial tranche of credit granted to ASEC Algeria, a subsidiary of Egyptian ASEC Cement Holding, for the construction of a 3Mta cement plant in Djelfa, Algeria. Colombia’s Government to fine Cemex US$155m

Cemex acknowledges that while the environmental authority in Colombia has not made the notification official, it recognises that it could be fined US$155m for alleged damages to the river Tunjuelo from the exploitation of a quarry located in Bogotá. Lafarge to build plant in Uzbekistan

Lafarge will build a cement plant with a capacity of 2Mta in the Jizak region (central Uzbekistan), according to the Uzstroymaterialy Joint Stock Company, the project’s customer. Lafarge and Uzstroymaterialy have signed an agreement of intent on joint construction of the plant. Russia’s Sibirsky Cement output up 2% on year in January–June

Russian holding Sibirsky Cement increased cement output 2% on the year to 1.29Mt in January–June, a spokesperson for the company said Thursday. In June, Sibirsky Cement produced 390,551t of cement. No comparison was provided. Cement sales amounted to 1.272 million tonnes in January–June and 385,251 tonnes in June, the company said. Cement imports to Azerbaijan reduced

In January-May Azerbaijan imported about 554,800t of cement and cement clinker, which is 23.6 per cent less than the same period last year, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said. During January-May approximately 323.500t of cement were imported to the country, or 21.4 per cent less than the same period last year. In January-June Azerbaijan produced about 589,000t of cement, which is 0.6 per cent less than the same period of last year.

Orient Paper plans cement plant in Karnataka, India

Orient Paper & Industries (OPIL) is likely to set up a cement plant in Karnataka with a capacity of 4Mta as it aims to double capacity to 10Mt in five years. The CK Birla group’s diversified company has acquired land in the state and has sought for environmental clearances for the INR1500-crore project, said a person privy to the development requesting anonymity. Managing director ML Pachisia said the company does not comment on market speculation.
