Holcim wants to modify proposed cement factory near Oamaru

Holcim New Zealand says a decline in local demand for cement means it will have to modify the design of a new factory near Oamaru, so it can send more cement offshore.   The environment court last year declined an appeal against the proposed US$300m plant, which will produce about 900,000tpa of cement.   Holcim’s capital projects manager, Ken Cowie, says cement sales fell by 20 per cent last year because of the recession.   He says Holcim wants to modify the plant so more clinker can be load...

Aditya Birla Group production update for June

The Aditya Birla Group’s cement production in June up by 2.59% at 3.155Mt while its dispatches were up 0.52% at 3.156Mt over the year ago period.

For the period April to June 2010, the group’s cement production was up 5.06% at 9.972Mt as against 9.49Mt during April to June 2009.

Dispatches rose by 4.12% at 9.889Mt in April to June 10 as against 9.498Mt in the corresponding period last year.

Nirma plant: SC defers hearing on farmers’ appeals, India

The Supreme Court on Monday deferred its hearing on appeals against construction of Nirma Ltd’s cement plant near Mahuva’s coastline and asked the Gujarat High Court to dispose of the review petition filed by the farmers.

Athi River gears up for expansion drive

Athi River Mining has set aside Sh12.5 billion for its expansion programme. Leading Indian cement players (ACC, Ambuja Cement, Aditya Birla group, Shree Cement and Jaiprakash Associates) reported a 7.6% year-on-year (y-o-y) growth in their total despatches to 8.7 million tonne in the month of June, 2010. Lafarge Indonesia plant starts production

Production has started up again at the Lafarge Indonesia plant following the destruction caused by the Boxing day tsunami of 2004. Plant construction of the  PT Semen Andalas works  in Banda Aceh started in 2006 and production began in July 2010, according to President Director of Lafarge Cement Indonesia (LCI) Marc Jarrault. Prior to the tsumani, the plant was capable of producing 1.2Mta but production capacity has now been increased to 1.6Mta.

Seven killed in Brazil factory accident

At least seven people were killed and 23 others injured in a construction accident at a cement plant in Itaiatuba, a city in the Brazilian Amazon, police in the northern state of Para said Monday.

Six of the victims died Monday at the plant, while the seventh victim died early Tuesday at a hospital in Santarem.
