Pakistan's cement industry dispatches in July, the first month of the FY19-20, fell to 3.5Mt from 3.6Mt in July 2018. This translates to a decline of 2.8 per cent, primarily due to a slowdown in domestic demand as the economy contracts rapidly owing to policies targeting runaway budget deficit and the current account gap, says local media. Clinker vessel salvage delay

A vessel carrying clinker which capsized in the Meghan River at Birbir, Bangaldesh on Tuesday could not be immediately salvaged. The MV Tanvir Tousib-2 was anchored at Birbir on the high-tide but was struck by another vessel, the Bashundhara Food-1. The MV Tanvir Tousib-2 was carrying clinker to Dhaka. The cost of the loss could be as much as BDT200m (US$2.36m) according to Khairul Alam, master of the ship. Attempts to salvage the ship were due to be attempted on Wednesday evening.

The overall output of large-scale manufacturing industries (LSMIs) decreased by 3.6 per cent for July 2018-June 2019 compared to the year-ago period, according to the Pakistan Federal Bureau of Statistics. After two-years of freezing cement and steel export fees, Saudi Arabia will begin levying fees on cement leaving the country in a bid to prop up falling oil revenues. The general cargo vessel Sri Lanka Glory, which brought cement clinker to Sri Lanka and later ran aground at Rumassala, Galle, southern Sri Lanka, due to inclement weather last week, is yet to be salvaged. Bangladesh's cement industry has recorded a fall of 17.3 per cent in export revenue to US$10.41m between July 2018 and June 2019, compared to US$12.59m of the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, according to the Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau.
