All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) has requested the Ministry of Finance to impose regulatory duty on cement imports from Iran to save the local industry. September’s figures were disappointing for the cement industry as dispatches registered 2.95Mt, a decline of 6.4 per cent annually (-3.7 per cent monthly). As anticipated, exports continued their downward fall by 36 per cent YoY where growth in local dispatches (+2.5 per cent YoY) failed to compensate for the decline in exports. The local Zimbabwe unit of LafargeHolcim reported an after tax loss of ZMD1.39m for the half year to June from a loss of ZWD1.32m in the prior comparable period, on weak demand as the country’s construction industry remains subdued. Algerian cement import value falls 13% in Jan-Jul 2015

The value of cement imports into Algeria during the first seven months of 2015 fell from US$352.92m to US$306.94m, down 13 per cent YoY, according to Customs data. Construction costs in Costa Rica are lower due to the import of Chinese cement, according to local news service La Republica. Chinese imports retail at around 20 per cent below cement produced locally by Cemex and Holcim. Competition has forced Zambezi Portland Cement (ZPC) to introduce a new and cheaper cement brand onto the domestic market. The arrival of Dangote Cement in Zambia with its greenfield Masaiti plant has seen cement prices tumble from ZMW70 (US$6.93) to ZMW50 (US$4.95) in a few months. ZPC’s new cement is aimed at the block-making, road construction and light construction market. The price of the new Eagle cement brand will be held at ZMW51.
