Cement import into USA draws US$506,250 OFAC penalty

The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has reached a US$506,250 settlement with ZAG International, based in Newtown (CT), for illegally sourcing clinker from Iran. Between 11 July 2014-15 January 2015, ZAG International purchased 263,563t of Iranian-origin clinker via a supplier in the UAE, which was then resold by the company to a customer in Tanzania. Iran produces 41Mt of cement in last 9M of 2018

Iran produced 41Mt of cement during the nine months to 21 December 2018, of which 4.8Mt were exported, reports the Iran Cement Association. Production rises in Iran's South Khorasan province

Two plants in Iran's South Khorasan province have produced around 765,000t of cement since the start of the current Iranian year (21 March-22 Oct), a 22 per cent YoY increase, according to Davud Shahraki, chairman of the province's Industry, Mining and Trade Organisation. Iranian province records export increase

Iran’s southern province of Hormozgan reported a 40 per cent increase in clinker and cement exports to 400,000t during the eight-month period between 21 March-21 November 2018, according to Masoumeh Mousavi of the country’s Mine and Trade Department. Products from the area were exported to Oman, UAE, Tanzania and South Africa.

Iran exported more than 7.65Mt of cement and clinker during the first seven months of the current Iranian year (21 March –22 October 2018). Iran’s cement exports increased seven per cent YoY to 3.8Mt in the first seven months of the Iranian year started 21 March, according to Abdurreza Sheykhan, chairman of Iran's Cement Industry Employers Association. According to the Federal Bureau of Statistics, Pakistan's cement industry earned foreign exchange revenue of US$29.05m by exporting 671,913t of cement during September compared to US$27.57m on 617,745t of cement in previous month. This represents a MoM growth of 5.4 per cent and 8.8 per cent in terms of value and quantity, respectively. Packaging costs rise 117% in Iran

The price of cement packaging in Iran has increased by 117 per cent from late-2017, according to Mohammad Ali Bod, member of the Iranian Cement Industry Employers' Association. The cost of packaging for a 50kg cement bag has risen from IRR8500 (US$0.2) to IRR18,500, with the surge negatively impacting producers. “Some plants will have to stop operating if the country doesn’t take necessary steps to resolve this problem,” said Mr Bod.

IMIDRO chairman resigns

Mehdi Karbasian, the chairman of the Iran Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organisation (IMIDRO), has resigned. Fars news agency reported that Kabasian resigned his post after new legislation on retired employees was ratified by the country. Ardeshir Sa'ad Mohammadi, deputy of IMIDRO, becomes the temporary new chairman of the organisation. IMIDRO operates eight major companies and 55 subsidiaries with activities in cement, steel and minerals.

Production remains stable in Iran

Iran produced 24,085,446t of cement in the first five months of its calendar year, started on 21 March 2018, representing a minor increase of one per cent YoY from 23,841,346t. Volumes remained stable in the 23 July-22 August period, reaching 5.179Mt from 5.173Mt of the year-ago period. Furthermore, clinker production rose 2.7 per cent YoY to 26,096,428t in the first five months, according to the Guild Association of the Cement Industry Employers.
