Algerian cement exports surge to US$42m

Cement exports from Algeria reached US$42.41m between January-July 2019, more than septupling YoY, according to the Algerian customs service. Exports of hydraulic cement and clinker rose from US$5.03m in the 7M18. Forecasts by the Ministry of Industry and Mines show that the country is aiming to lift its cement exports to US$500m over the next five years. HeidelbergCement has announced that its north American subsidiary, Lehigh Hanson Inc, has entered into an agreement to acquire Giant Cement’s (Elementia SAB de CV) Keystone facility in Bath, Pennsylvania. Cement demand in Spain declined 1.4 per cent YoY to 1,089,617t in August, according to Oficemen, the country’s cement association. In addition to lower domestic sales, exports have dropped by a quarter, registering a fall for 27 consecutive months.
