Egypt to consider new cement production licences

Egypt will consider new cement production licences if demand growth continues to exceed expectations, but has no plans to review licensing for steel, Trade Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid said on Monday in an interview with Reuters. Qatar National Cement Company (QNCC) and Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) have entered into a multi-million long-term strategic partnership to produce limestone. Taiwan Cement Corp will raise prices at its three plants in China by 6.5% to 7% in September due to strong demand, the Apply Daily reported Monday, citing Senior Vice President Edward Huang. Prices in southern China, where the company’s plants are located, are supported by plans to upgrade infrastructure and railways in Guangxi province, the paper cited Huang as saying.

An early morning fire caused an estimated US$3n in damages to a Hawaiian Cement plant building in Puunene, Maui today, Maui firefighters said. The cause of the fire at the building at 10400 Mokulele Highway is still under investigation. HeidelbergCement plans to implement a capital increase in September, estimated at between EUR1.2bn (US$1.7bn) and EUR1.5bn, a German daily said on Saturday, citing sources. Goldsun Development to build CNY1B China plant

Goldsun Development & Construction Corp plans to spend CNY1bn to build a cement plant in China’s Hunan province, the Economic Daily News reported Monday, citing company Chairman Charles Chen. The plant will be operational by the first quarter of 2011 and have a production capacity of 2Mta, the newspaper said, without citing sources. The report said Goldsun plans to raise the plant’s production capacity by another 2Mt, but didn’t provide a time frame.

Indian sales grow on the back of weak monsoons

Weak monsoons and new capacities seem to have benefited the cement industry in terms of increased sales.

Lehigh Cement to lay off 45 Tehachapi works, US

Lehigh Southwest Cement has announced a curtailment in production at its Tehachapi works and will lay off approximately 45 hourly employees in early October for an indefinite period. The curtailment “is due to current business and economic conditions, and the resultant deterioration in our sales volumes and pricing,” Plant Manager Alan Rowley said.
