FICO-Tay Ninh Joint Stock Cement Co. (TAFiCO) has taken over HCMC-based Phuong Nam cement plant for a total of VND400bn (US$25m). Morgan to open massive £64m kiln, UK

One of the biggest manufacturing projects in Wales will be officially opened tomorrow by First Minister Rhodri Morgan. The huge UK£64m new kiln at Castle Cement’s Padeswood works in Flint shire puts the North Wales plant at the leading edge of cement production in Europe, according to the company. Colombian cement sales stood at 5.23Mt in the period from January to August 2006, up 4.4 per cent YoY, according to data of the Colombian institute of cement producers ICPC. The figure showed an increase of 41.1 pct, compared to the same period of 2004. In August 2006, a total 728,721 tonnes of cement were sold, close to the record 767,322 tonnes sold in June 1998. Lafarge has significantly increased its investment in South Wales. The company is spending nearly UK£1m on developments at Ewenny quarry, near Bridgend, and a further UK£700,000 in hot asphalt batching at Hafod quarry, Newbridge.    Last year, the company took over Ewenny quarry from Minimi.
