A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.9 rattled Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Saturday, and residents fled their homes for higher ground fearing a possible tsunami, an official said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. South African cement sales soared by  28 per cent year-on-year (y/y) to 971,604t after climbing by only 2.1 per cent y/y in March 2005 to 924,652t. The y/y comparisons are distorted by Easter falling in March this year, whereas in 2004 it fell in April. Government Approves Semen Gresik’s new plant

The Government of Indonesia approved the plan of PT Semen Gresik Tbk to develop a new cement facility at the investment value of US$400m to boost its production capacity.    The President Director of the company, Satriyo, said that the company would use internal fund to develop such facility, with the additional capacity of 2.5Mta. With more than 6 million tonnes of capacity addition in the pipeline in the next three years, the Indian cement industry could continue to remain under the surplus condition. Republic Cement Corp, part of the worldwide Lafarge empire, expects a tough year in 2005 as it grapples with rising production costs, continued tight government spending on infrastructure, and a possible decline in sales volume.
