Chile’s three cement producers Cemento Polpaico, Empresas Melón and Cementos Bío Bío have submitted separate filings to the country’s securities regulator (SVS) reporting first quarter results. Polpaico led 1Q05 shipments with 366,483t, followed by Meló with 359,511t and Bío Bío at 282,222t. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez threatened cement companies with price regulations if they fail to bring down the prices for their product.  "The private sector must lower prices (for cement) or we will have to fix those prices," Chavez said Tuesday during a televised government event. Egypt’s Orascom Construction Industries’ (OCI) Algerian subsidiary expects to almost double its cement output by June to meet rising demand, a senior executive said on Monday. Indonesia’s PT Semen Cibinong said its first quarter to March net loss widened to 138.94 bln rupiah, up 31 per cent from its net loss of 105.67 bln rupiah a year earlier because of higher operating expenses. In the first three months of 2005, Russian cement enterprises produced 7.8Mt of cement, up 3.0% year-on-year. In the same quarter, the Eurocement Group produced about 1.9Mt of cement, thus matching its 1Q2004 level. Net sales grew 10.5% to 155m soles and operating profit fell 10.2% to 34.8m soles due to increased operating costs. Colombia’s largest cement producer Cemento Argos posted a COP130bn (US$55.6m) net profit in the first quarter of this year, up 201% from 1Q04, the company said.  The improvement was due to increased revenue from associated cement companies and higher dividend payments from non-cement companies that are part of the investment portfolio, Argos said.
