Shanghai-listed Conch Cement has been ranked first in competitiveness among listed companies in China in the first half of this year, according to a result of monitoring on competitiveness of China’s listed companies conducted by the China Academy of Social Sciences. Mexican cement maker Cementos Cruz Azul will start a 24-month construction project on a US$300m, 1Mta capacity cement plant in Puebla state municipality Palmar de Bravo, the state government announced. For improved access, the company will build a 14km railroad and a stretch of road connecting the plant to the Puebla-Orizaba highway. Cimpor aims to invest nearly EUR100m in its South African factory by 2007, director Luis Sequeira Martins has said.  Cimpor wants to boost its production capacity at its factory in Natal eastern South Africa to 1.7Mta from the current 1Mt, Martins said was reported as saying by local news sources. Vietnam to face cement shortage next year

Vietnam is predicted to experience a shortage of around 6.5Mt of cement in 2005, mainly due to low production capacity of local cement manufacturers and increasing demand for the product. Turkish cement producer Cimsa will invest US$30m in the enlargement of its factory in Kayseri, central Turkey. The company plans to set up a rock crusher, mill and a kiln at the plant which will cut costs and secure annual production of between 800,000t and 1Mt of cement. In Jan-Aug 2004 Eurocement made produced 5.2Mt of cement, an increase of three per cent from the figure reported in January-August 2003. Packed cement output was about 670,000t, an almost 10 per cent rise from 2003. Total output reached 6.4Mt. Products were shipped to more than 50 regions of Russia and abroad, the company’s press service said.
