Yanbu Cement Jan-Sept 2004 net profit increase, Saudi Arabia

Saudi cement producer Yanbu Cement Company (YCC) posted a net profit of SAR337.5m  (US$90m) for the first nine months of 2004, up by 12.9 per cent YoY. YCC registered earnings per share (EPS) of SAR16.08 (US$4.29), up from SAR14.24 (US$3.79). Net sales rose to SAR593m  (US$158.1m) from SAR566m (US$150.9m).

Lafarge substitute fuel to be decided, UK

Lafarge Cement UK wants to switch from burning coal in the cement kiln at its Aberthaw works and burn bonemeal as a partial substitute. The competition regulator today formally acknowleged that legal proceedings against Boral Ltd’s troubled $840m bid for Adelaide Brighton Ltd had been called off. Boral last month abandoned its takeover bid for the cement and lime producer, explaining it was no longer worth the time, money and effort of a court battle with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Vietnam expects to face a cement shortage of about 6.5Mt next year, as demand is increasing faster than domestic supply, a government executive said. The Bureau of Research Standards (BRS) has belied accusations that its testing equipment for cement products are outdated, saying the results of the state-run testing center are reliable. Javedan Cement Ltd (JCL) has posted a record profit of Rs 121.697m during the year 2003-2004. According to JCL here on Thursday, for the first time the company has reported such a big profit in the last 12 years. Paraguay’s state cement company Industria Nacional del Cemento (INC) plans to invest US$15m next year to optimize and increase production, local paper La Nación quoted INC president Amílcar Troche as saying.
