Yanbu Cement reported its first quarter net income, after Zakah, rose 16 per cent from a year earlier to reach SR 104.9 million ($28m). In 2003, Yanbu Cement delivered 100 percent of its production to the market - estimated at 4.1Mt. It exported 703,000t during the year. Local demand for cement reached 22.2Mt in 2003. The Indian cement industry has ended fiscal 2003-04 with a 5.5 per cent rise in despatches at 117.13Mt as against 111.07Mt in fiscal 2002-03.. Cement company to absorb extra fuel costs

Jordan Cement Factories Company (JCFC) will not raise cement prices at present as a result of the increase in fuel bills, JCFC Board Chairman Abdul Ilah Khatib said. Khatib made these remarks at a general assembly meeting on Saturday. South African cement volumes soared by 19.3 per cent y/y in the first quarter 2004 to 2,282,068t, according to data released by the Cement & Concrete Institute (CNCI).  There was a 14.3 per cent y/y rise to 905,875t in March after increasing by 21.5 per cent y/y in February and a 6.3 per cent y/y rise in January 2004. TPI Polene PCL, Thailand’s number three cement maker, said on Friday it expected its second-quarter net profit to exceed the 2.3 billion baht ($59 million) posted in the first quarter.  Chief executive Prachai Leophairatana told reporters the forecast was based on rising cement sales and prices on the back of a domestic construction boom. Last Friday the House of Representatives voted 357-65 in favour of a $275bn highway and transit bill. The spending bill will now be sent to a House-Senate conference, where negotiations will be carried out to resolve differences between this bill and the Senates proposal of a $318bn spending program.
