Saudi cement producer, Southern Province Cement (SPC), posted a net profit of 500.8 mln Saudi riyals (US$133.5m for 2003, up from 482.4 mln riyalsfor 2002, it was reported on January 18, 2004.  The company's clinker output rose to 4,092,849t from 3,616,904t, while cement sales totalled 3,809,269t, compared to 3,685,720t. Ruhunu Cement - bids for minority stake

The Sri Lankan government Monday invited bids for its 15 per cent stake in Ruhunu Cement as part of its 2004 privatization program.  Bids should be submitted by Jan. 30, the Public Enterprises Reform Commission, or PERC, said in a statement posted on its Web site.  The Ruhunu Cement stake sale is part of government efforts to exit from minority shareholdings held by the treasury in several listed and unlisted firms.

Argentine cement maker Loma Negra plans to resume investments in 2004 and forecast a sales increase of 8.0 per cent year-on-year, the company said on January 16, 2004. Loma Negra succeeded in restructuring its US$400m debt in September 2003 and at present is on the way of recovery. Loma Negra will resume operations in its cement plant in Barker, near Buenos Aires, in view of the expected major sales in 2004. Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd, India's fourth largest cement maker, reported a 1.3 per cent drop in quarterly profit on Friday as a result of sluggish prices in its key market.
