Cement demand in Spain reached 46.06Mt in 2003, an all time high, Spanish Cement Makers Association OFICEMEN said on January 21, 2004.  Cement consumption in Spain increased 4.4 per cent year-on-year in 2003. Al-Abbas to take over Thatta Cement

The Al-Abbas Group confirmed to the Privatisation Commisison in a letter Wednesday that they would buy out Thatta Cement at Rs 9.95 per share, or a total of Rs 1.12 billion since the Star Cotton Corporation, the highest bidder for the transaction, backed out of the bidding, a source close to the deal told Daily Times. The Spasskcement plant (located in the Primorsky region) made 585,000t of cement in 2003, a 23 per cent rise on the year.  Clinker production stood at 632,200t, up seven per cent year-on-year. In 2004, the plant aims to produce one million tonnes of cement. The cement maker is controlled by the Vostokcement company (a Park Group member).

Ambuja Cement to be merged with Gujarat Ambuja

Ambuja Cement Rajasthan Ltd has had approval for its merger with Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd, India's fourth-biggest cement maker, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) said on Thursday.  Under the plan, approved by the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction, Ambuja Cement Ltd shareholders will get one share of Gujarat Ambuja Cements for every 50 held, the NSE said.

Titan to lease port space

Tarmac America, a subsidiary of Titan America LLC is proceeding with plans to expand its operations in Tampa with a cement facility at the Port of Tampa. Cemex has announced a 9.5 per cent increase in turnover to US$7,164.4m in respect of 2003.  The operating profit at the EBITDA level advanced by 10.0 per cent to US$2,108m and the trading profit (EBIT) improved by 11.1 per cent to US$1,455.2m.  The EBITDA margin is little changed at 29.4 per cent.
