Canada: LafargeHolcim to shut Kamloops plant

Lafarge Canada announced that it will shut its plant in east Kamloops for the foreseeable future. A downturn in demand in Alberta and western Canada and a result of plunging oil prices has made the 0.2Mta works unnecessary. The shutdown is due to be completed by the end of the year and will leave just operational cement plants in British Colombia, a Lafarge plant in Richmond and Lehigh Hanson’s in Delta. This week it was announced that Cementos Argos was looking to expand its overseas cement capacity by upgrading its 0.3Mta Cementos del Sur (Cesur) facility in San Lorenzo Valley, southern Honduras. The new cement plant currently under construction in Barranco Amarillo, Peña, Yaracuy state, has been completed 70 per cent and is expected to enter service in the first quarter of 2017, according to the Yaracuy government. DR Congo: Matadi cement price falls

For the first time in a month, the price of a 50kg bag of cement has fallen in Matadi from CDF12,500 (US$12.16) to CDF8500, according to domestic news reports. The drop in price comes as a result of increased supply of cement imported from Angola. However, sales remain subdued and the Association of Independent Cement Consumers of Kongo-Central has recommended that the government removes the import tax charged at the border post of Lufu.

Cameroon: new Cimencam plant by 2018

Société les Cimenteries du Cameroun (Cimencam) announced that the commissioning of its new Nomayos cement plant is scheduled for mid-2018. The new grinding unit will boast an installed capacity of 2Mta and is expected to cost XAF23bn (US$38.5m). UK: construction activity falls in August

The UK's Office of National Statistics has released its construction figures for August that saw a fall of 1.5 per cent in construction activity. Decreases were seen in all new work as well as the repair and maintenance segments of 1.4 and 1.5 per cent, respectively. Infrastructure suffered the biggest downturn of 5.1 per cent. JSW Cement announced plans to expand its production capacity to 30Mta by 2020. According to Director and CEO of JSW Cement, Anil Kumar Pillai, an investment of INR27bn (US$404.3m) has been allocated to increasing capacity to 17Mta by 2018, up from its current capacity of 8.76Mta. Spanish cement consumption contracted 3.4 per cent in September to reach 973,047t, according to the country’s cement organisation, Oficemen.
