Euro area construction output down by 0.8%

Construction output in the euro area declined for the fourth consecutive month in February, the latest data from Eurostat shows. Construction in the euro zone decreased 0.8 per cent from January, when it fell 2.1 per cent, the European Union’s statistics office in Luxembourg said yesterday. Jaiprakash in new attempt to sell Gujarat assets, India

Jaiprakash Associates is reportedly planning to sell its Gujarat-based cement units within a few weeks in an effort to reduce debt. According to reports by the Business Standard of India, the Gujarat cement assets are expected to be sold for INR4000 crore. Earlier, the group was in talks with the Birlas to sell the cement units, however, as its expected valuation of US$170/t was deemed too high, it failed to secure the deal. Saudi orders cement imports to meet shortages

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has ordered 10Mt of cement to be imported into the kingdom to meet cement shortages and the construction of more cement plants over the medium-term is also being encouraged. Cement sales in Brazil reached 16.1Mt in the first quarter of 2013, a decline of 1.9 per cent from the same period of last year, latest data from local association SNIC shows. The decline in sales confirms a deceleration trend compared to the quarterly expansions seen in 2012 which rose 13.7 per cent, 5.9 per cent, five per and 4.1 per cent in the 1Q-4Q12, respectively. Vietnam’s leading cement producer Vietnam Cement Industry Corp (Vicem) reported a 19.2 per cent YoY rise as domestic shipments increased but exports declined. The state-run cement corporation said it sold 4.91Mt of cement and clinker in the first quarter of 2013, rising 19.2 per cent YoY. Argentine cement factories shipped 938,872t in March 2013 (including exports), representing an 11.9 per cent increase compared to February, latest data from local cement association AFCP shows.
