Algeria: Gica launches 1.5Mt import tender

Algerian cement company Gica launched a tender for the importation of 1.5Mta of cement with the first delivery of 0.95Mt due early July. The imports are expected to alleviate the cement shortage in the country, which currently has a demand exceeding 20Mt but only 17Mt in national output. Kuwait Portland Cement net profit surges

Kuwait Portland Cement said its net profit surged to KWD3.2m (US$11.3m) in the first quarter of 2013 from KWD2.3m a year ago, the trader said in a bourse statement. Earnings per share (EPS) rose to 34.69 fils from 24.8 fils. Total assets stood at KWD 80.2m at end the end of March 2013, up from KWD75.3m a year earlier. Kuwait Portland Cement Co. is engaged in import of bulk cement and supply in the local markets. It has a 60,000t silo from which it distributes imported cement.

US February shipments edge ahead

Total shipments of Portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico for February 2013 were about 4.7Mt, slightly more than shipments in February 2012. Shipments for the year through to February 2013 were 9.6Mt, up by nearly three per cent, the latest data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) shows. OCI to settle tax dispute with Lafarge

OCI has agreed to pay about EGP7bn (US$1bn) over five years to settle a tax dispute on the sale of its cement unit to Lafarge back in 2007, Bloomberg has reported. The payments will start in May this year and end in 2017, OCI said. The Egyptian Tax Authority determined that "there was no tax evasion by the company and is exonerating management and the company from any wrongdoing related to the transaction," the company said.

Raysut Cement to construct terminal in Port of Duqm, Oman

Oman’s leading cement producer, Raysut Cement Company (RCC), is planning to construct a cement terminal at Duqm port as well as develop limestone mines in Duqm. Holcim Nicaragua is carrying out various works at its Nagarote grinding plant, representing an investment of US$3m this year. The company is currently expanding its cement dispatch centre and its cement storage capacity in addition to the recent installation of new cement grinding equipment. Holcim Nicaragua is the second-largest player in the Central American country behind Cemex Nicaragua. Holcim's Nagorote grinding plant has a capacity of 0.3Mta.
