Preliminary data from the US Geological Survey shows that shipments of Portland and blended cement in 1Q13 were marginally higher compared to the same period of last year but harsh weather conditions, particularly in the final month of the quarter, dragged on sales. Indonesian cement sales increased by 8.6 per cent in the four months to the end of April 2013, the latest data from the Indonesian Cement Association (ASI) reveals. Sales for the January-April 2013 period reached 18.12Mt compared to 16.68Mt in the same period of last year. Domestic cement sales on the Ecuadorian market in the first four months of 2013 rose by 14.2 per cent YoY while April sales alone surpassed 500,000t. New cement unit for Tunisia operational by 2014

Tunisia will expand its cement production facilities in the region of Bizerte by 2014, according to Mehdi Jomaa, the country’s minister of industry. State-owned Ciments de Bizerte operates at around 1Mta. The extension to the Bizerte plant represents an investment of TND250m (US$150.5m). Equipment has been delivered to site and the assembly process reportedly has started.

The Iranian cement industry produced 4,940,597t of cement and 6,277,978t of clinker in the first month of the Iranian calendar, known as Farvardin (20 March - 20 April 2013), according to local sources. Local cement producers in Argentina have reported a rise in dispatches (local and exports) for April 2013 whilst consumption on the local market has also demonstrated healthy gains, latest figures from the country's cement association, AFCP, show. Sales in the Brazilian market rose by 11.6 per cent YoY in April to 5.9Mt, latest data from Sindicato Nacional da Indústria do Cimento, shows. For the first four months of the year, accumulated sales reached 22.1Mt, a marginal advance of 1.4 per cent compared to the same period of last year. Cement sales for the rolling 12 month period of May 2012-April 2013 were 68.6Mt, an increase of 3.3 per cent on the comparable period of the previous year (May 2011-April 2012).
