JK Cement begins construction of UAE cement plant

India’s JK Cement has started construction of a white cement plant in the UAE, the completion of which could make it a top five player in the niche market of white cement. The company’s vice president N. Gowrishankar told Gulf News that the new plant, to be constructed in the emirate of Fujairah, will involve an investment of US$149.7m and a capacity of 0.6Mta of white cement, with the ability to switch operations to 1Mta of grey cement.  The plant is scheduled for commissioning in 2013. ...

Spanish firms to pay fine on northern cartel

A number of Spanish cement companies have been imposed with a fine worth over EUR11.09m by Spanish competition watchdog, CNC, for setting up a cartel in northern Spain. Cements Portland was ordered to pay a fine of EUR5.72m, followed by Beriain (EUR2.5m), Cetya (EUR1.14m), Vresa (EUR959, 277) and Cemex Espana (EUR502, 283), Cinco Dias reported.

JK Lakshmi Cement is ensuring it is well placed for a revival in future domestic demand by planning to spend US$386m in the next financial year on expanding capacity, the Wall Street Journal reports. UK monthly construction output flat

UK construction output figures from the Office of National Statistics for November show no change from the low levels recorded in October. However, output was 1.6 per cent lower than in November 2010 when the industry was severely affected by bad weather. Brazilian cement demand has continued its upward momentum with 2011 sales advancing 7.3 per cent YoY, latest data from Sindicato Nacional da Indústria de Cimento shows. Preliminary industry figures and market estimates, show that domestic sales reached 63.5Mt in 2011 compared to 59.12Mt in the previous year. HeidelbergCement inaugurates new mill, Bangladesh

HeidelbergCement officially inaugurated a new 0.8Mta cement ball mill at its plant in the seaport Chittagong, Bangladesh.
