Cameroon to start 0.5Mta factory

A cement factory in Cameroon’s port city of Douala will start production in four months, with an expected annual output of 500,000t, state-owned CRTV reported today, citing Trade Minister Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana. Tanzania Portland Cement, a unit of HeidelbergCement, said first-half net profit rose 43 per cent and forecast higher sales for the rest of 2011 thanks to a construction boom in east Africa’s second-largest economy and improved efficiency. In a report on the construction sector, Exane BNP Paribas lowered Wednesday the ratings and price targets on Italian cement makers Italcementi and Buzzi Unicem due to expected weak demand in Italy. Indonesian construction sector to expand 5% in 2H11

The Indonesian Construction Association (AKI) is upbeat that the construction sector will grow more than five per cent and contribute more than 10 per cent to the economy in the second half of this year.

UK construction orders at lowest level since 1980

Orders for new construction work in the UK fell dramatically in the second quarter of the year and are now at a level not seen since 1980. Orders fell by over 16% compared with an already low figure in quarter one and are over 23% down on the same quarter in 2010. ACC August cement production up 20.5%

ACC Ltd, one of the two quoted Indian subsidiaries of Holcim, in which it holds 50.10% of the equity, increased cement production in August by 20.5% to 1.88Mt and despatches rose by 19.8% to 1.88Mt. The cummulative increase for the eight months was a 14.5% advance in production to 16.09Mt and corresponding rise in despatches was 14.7% to 16.06Mt.

Jaiprakash August shipments rise 21% YoY

India’s Jaiprakash Associates said in a statement on Thursday its cement shipments in August rose 21 per cent from a year earlier to 1.32Mt. The engineering and construction firm, which also has interests in hospitality and power, operates capacity to produce 21.3Mta of cement.

Hills Group to acquire Cemex ready-mix operations, UK

The Hills Group, Ltd., a UK-based provider of waste management services, has entered into an agreement to acquire the Newbury ready-mix concrete operations from Cemex. The acquisition will allow Hills Group to strengthen its market presence in the west Berkshire, north Hampshire and south Oxfordshire areas.

Tunisian cement shortage being addressed

Tunisian cement producers Ciments de Bizerte among other firms, will import 200,000t of cement  to supply the local market which is currently shortages and is being sold in the black market at high prices. Ciments de Bizerte has already launched an international tender to import the quantity. The state-owned company, produces 0.9Mt of clinker which is expected to reach 1.35Mt after the completion of its expansion project.
