Saudi Yanbu Cement 1Q net profit drops 17.9% Y0Y

Saudi cement producer Yanbu Cement Co (YCC) said its net profit for the first quarter of 2011 dropped 17.9% YoY to SAR101.1m (US$26.9m). Earnings per share (EPS) stood at SAR 0.96, down from SAR 1.17. The company attributed the decrease in bottom-line figures to lower sales and the temporary shutdown of kiln 4 due to regular maintenance works.

Texas cement data suggests weak April nationally

Cement sales in Pakistan have dropped seven per cent in the first 11 months (July-May) of the current fiscal 2010-11, leading to a decline in utilisation rates and losses to the industry, the industry association says. Xinjiang West to construct 3000tpd line, China

Xinjiang West-Construction plans to invest CNY350m (US$54m) to construct a 3000tpd dry-process line, according to a company filing. Tianyu Huaxin Cement Development, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Xinjiang West-Construction, will oversee the construction of the production line. Upon completion, the production line is expected to produce 900,000t of clinker and 1.2Mt of cement.

India’s UltraTech Cement May shipments down 3.2%

India’s largest cement producer UltraTech Cement said on Wednesday cement shipments in May were at 3.24Mt, down 3.2 per cent from a year earlier. Production was down 4.9 percent to 3.25Mt, the company said in a statement. UltraTech Cement, part of the Aditya Birla group, has an installed capacity of about 49Mta.

Vietnam Ministry proposes to raise cement export duties

The Tax Policy Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Finance has proposed to raise export duties for cement and steel in an effort to regulate business profits, driven by the low prices of inputs. The ministry has proposed imposing a 5.3% tax on cement, and 5% on clinker. Fire halts production at South Sulawesi cement factory, Indonesia

A fire at the PT Semen Tonasa IV plant in Bungoro, South Sulawesi, on Monday gutted the plant’s newest mill. 
The plant, owned by PT Semen Gresik Group, has estimated a loss in output of up to 8000tpd of cement.
 Gresik corporate secretary Sunardi Prionomurti said production at the plant would stop for at least 10 days.
 “We need maybe 10 days to repair the mill,” he said.

Ghana sees cement prices rising

The price of cement has gone up in the Ho Municipality, Volta Region, which lies at the eastern part of Ghana, from GHS12 to GHS15 (US$8 to US$10).
