Lafarge to close Frangey plant at end-2012

Lafarge Ciments announced it will close its Frangey plant in Burgundy at the end of 2012. Holcim has warned that if the price of oil continues to rise, it will be forced to increase the price of its cement in the El Salvador market in the short-term. Sales of cement increased 7.55% to 5.214Mt during the first four months of the year, compared with 4.848Mt during the same period of 2010. For April, cement deliveries reached close to 1.5Mt, close to the October 2009 record. Vietnam produces 24.7Mt of cement in Jan-May

Cement producers in Vietnam are estimated to have made 24.7Mt of cement in the first five months of this year. The figure represents a YoY increase of US$13.9%, the government’s General Statistics Office said in a monthly reported released late Wednesday. In May, the country’s cement output is estimated to stand at 5.8Mt, up 19.1% YoY. The Ministry of Construction forecast Vietnam’s cement consumption is forecast to stand between 54.5Mt and 56Mt this year, up 9%-10% from a year earlier.

Southeast Asian export cement prices surge

The earthquake and ensuing tsunami in Japan has contributed to a sharp surge in prices for export cement in Southeast Asia. Currently, a tonne of cement costs around US$43, a 20% increase on the previous year. Distribution difficulties push up cement prices in Colombia

Colombian cement retail prices have increased by about 10% above the expected level of inflation as winter rains affected distribution. Holcim announced Tuesday the closure of its site in La Hulpe and consolidation of its administrative and financial services for Belgium in Nivelles. This decision threatens 27 jobs.

Tianshan Cement to invest in subsidiary

Xinjiang Tianshan Cement Co Ltd, a cement producer based in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, announced recently that it plans to invest CNY196m (US$30m) into a Jiangsu Province-based subsidiary to build a cement mill, sources reported. The company will also invest CNY40.1m into its Xinjiang-based subsidiary to update technology for flyash storage, which could generate CNY4.03m of profit with a break-even period of 10 years.

Fauji Cement to issue right shares, Pakistan

Fauji Cement Company Ltd will issue 637.826 million right shares of Rs10 each at a 50 per cent discount. According to a communique sent to the Karachi Stock Exchange on Tuesday, the company said that right shares will be offered at Rs5/share.
